iOpenPod

Strawberry Music Player

Rhythmbox

Best for: GNOME desktop users who want basic iPod sync integrated into the music player they already use.

gtkpod

Best for: Linux users who want a straightforward, dedicated iPod management GUI without the overhead of a full music player.

GNUpod

A collection of Perl scripts from the GNU project for managing music on iPods from the command line. GNUpod supports FLAC, OGG, and ALAC with on-the-fly re-encoding, and handles playlists including iTunes Smart Playlists. It’s one of the earliest CLI-based approaches to iPod management.

Best for: Users comfortable with Perl and the command line who want a lightweight, scriptable tool.

GNUpod

How podkit is different

podkit was born from using several of these tools and hitting the same wall: getting music onto an iPod was always too manual. Copy files, get duplicates. Update your collection, start from scratch. Want to run it headless? No option.

podkit approaches the problem differently:

  • Collection-level sync. podkit diffs your music collection against what’s on the iPod and applies only the changes — additions, removals, and metadata updates. No duplicates, no manual file management. Run podkit sync and your iPod matches your collection.

  • CLI-first and headless. Designed to run unattended on a server, in a cron job, or from a script. No GUI required. Plug in your iPod, run one command, done.

  • Smart transcoding. Lossless files are transcoded to AAC, compatible lossy files are copied directly, and nothing is ever re-encoded unnecessarily. Your source files are never modified.

  • Multiple sources. Sync from local directories, Subsonic/Navidrome servers, or both — in a single command.

  • A library, not just a CLI. The core sync engine is a separate package (podkit-core) that other projects can build on. The CLI is one interface; a TUI, desktop app, or integration could use the same engine.

If you want a music player that also syncs to iPods, Strawberry or Rhythmbox are great choices. If you want an interactive GUI for managing your iPod, iOpenPod is excellent. If you want effortless, automated syncing driven by your music collection — that’s what podkit is built for.
